Day of Immunology Outreach
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology hosts a Day of Immunology outreach event where up to 90 primary and secondary school students are invited to a field trip to UBC to learn about the immune system! This annual 1-day event has been organized since 2012 by Dr. Ninan Abraham and assisted by Dr. Parvin Bolourani (UBC Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology, Outreach, Alumni Engagement, Postdoctoral affairs & Project Coordinator) in a co-operative team-led model with Dr. Mike Gold, Graduate students, staff and others in the Microbiology and Immunology and Cell programs. During the event, students are educated on how immune responses occur, the tools used in immunology research, and how to prevent the spread of disease. Key take-home message are that microbes are everywhere, the body has a robust defence in the immune system and that we can help protect ourselves with proper basic hygiene practices and getting vaccinated. This is done by means of interactive activities including Glo-Germ spread and detection, examining colonies and viral plaques, visiting a confocal microscope and flow cytometer suite and playing a mock-up vaccine-infection game.
